Every surgical and critical care professional knows the drill: the morning equipment check. In the past, this usually meant turning on the defibrillator, running a manual test fire, verifying the energy output on the display or paper strip, logging the result, and moving on.

While automated self-tests and modern shock technology have simplified parts of this process, relying solely on a quick test fire is a dangerous shortcut. A green “ready” light won’t tell you if your adhesive pads expired yesterday, or if an ECG lead cable was pinched in a bed rail during the night shift.

To ensure your resuscitation equipment is truly emergency-ready, your team’s daily routine should incorporate these essential physical and operational checks.

1. Verify status indicators & auto-test logs

Most modern clinical defibrillators run automated daily internal self-tests, checking high-voltage circuitry, internal battery, and software.

  • Check the readiness display: Ensure the visual status indicator shows an active green checkmark, “OK,” or ready symbol, if equipped (varies by manufacturer).
  • Confirm test output: If your unit prints an automated daily strip or logs a report, confirm it passed all internal diagnostic parameters before filing it in your compliance log.

2. Audit supplies & expiration dates

Supplies degrade over time, and missing accessories cause critical delays during a code.

  • Hands-free therapy pads: Check the expiration date on sealed therapy electrode packages. Over time, the conductive gel dries out, which leads to poor signal quality, loss of pacing/defibrillation capability, or even severe patient skin burns.
  • Pediatric capability: Verify that pediatric pads, adapters, or dedicated pediatric supplies are present and intact.
  • Resuscitation prep kit: Ensure razors, skin prep pads, trauma shears, and dry wipes are stocked with the unit.

3. Inspect cables, leads, and accessories

Cables take a significant amount of abuse in high-traffic clinical environments.

  • Physical wear: Check ECG leads, hands-free therapy cables, and main power cords for cracks, tears, exposed wiring, or bent/broken connector pins.
  • Multi-parameter sensors: If your defibrillator includes integrated SpO2, NIBP, or End-Tidal CO2 monitoring, inspect those accessories, cables, and sensors.
  • External hard paddles (if applicable): While hands-free pads are now the standard of care, if your facility maintains hard paddles, check the paddle surfaces for pitting, scratches, or dried gel residue. Damaged paddle faces can cause electrical arcing and poor contact.

4. Evaluate power supply & smart battery health

A defibrillator is only as reliable as its power source.

  • Mains connection: Ensure the unit remains plugged into a hospital-grade AC outlet when not in transit. Verify that the AC power indicator light is illuminated.
  • Battery diagnostics: Many modern lithium-ion defibrillator batteries feature fuel gauges or smart diagnostics. Confirm the battery charge level is full and that the battery is within its operational service life, replacing it according to clinical engineering guidelines even if it appears to hold a charge.

5. Perform physical & sensory checks

Take ten seconds to physically examine the device hardware:

  • Housing integrity: Look for casing cracks, fluid ingress from spills, or loose dials and buttons.
  • Sensory red flags: Listen for unusual fan noises or high-pitched humming when powered on. Watch for localized hot spots or strange odors.
  • Recorder paper: Confirm the strip chart recorder has ample paper loaded, feeds straight, and prints legibly.

6. Verify network & fleet connectivity

If your facility utilizes networked equipment management platforms — cloud-based fleet dashboards or direct EHR integration — ensure the unit is connected to the facility Wi-Fi network so automated self-test data and code records sync seamlessly with clinical engineering and medical records.

⚠️ Immediate Action Protocol: If any step fails — whether it’s a cracked cable, an expired pad, or an unresolved error code — tag the device OUT OF SERVICE immediately, pull a functional backup unit, and notify your biomedical equipment service provider.

A thorough daily check takes just a couple of minutes, but it ensures that when seconds count, your equipment delivers.
